Contraindications to massage
Contraindications to massage can be both general and more specific depending on the type of massage. There is also a complete ban, or you can only have massage sessions with the consent of your doctor and necessarily with a certified massage therapist.
General contraindications to massage:
- High temperature (>37.8 ° C).
- Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.
- Infectious disease.
- First trimester of pregnancy.
- Exposure to alcohol or recreational drugs.
- Accident, injury or surgery within the last 3 months (6 months if it is a major surgery).
Next, we will give you examples of contraindications to the most popular types of massage. Many of these contraindications coincide, but each has its own specifics.
Contraindications to lymphatic drainage massage:
- Thrombosis.
- Heart and vascular diseases.
- Liver or kidney diseases.
- Active phases of skin diseases.
- Neuralgia.
- Lymphadenitis (inflammation of the lymph nodes).
- Burns.
- Oncology.
- Pregnancy.
- Viral diseases with high temperature.
- Exacerbation of inflammation.
Contraindications to anti-cellulite massage:
- High temperature.
- Cancer.
- Tuberculosis.
- Arthritis.
- Skin diseases (eczema, allergies, varicose veins).
- Weak or spider veins in massage areas.
- Skin damage.
- Bleeding disorders.
Contraindications to sports massage:
- Open wounds (cuts, lacerations, abrasions that have not yet healed).
- Torn or strained muscles, tendons, or ligaments.
- Bruises. Massaging a bruise too quickly after an injury can cause further damage and, in some cases, bone growth in the muscle.
- Burns, frostbite, and bone fractures.
- Periostitis. Periostitis is an inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the bone. Sports massage for this condition will cause further irritation. However, other parts of the body can be massaged.
- Rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
- Bursitis. Bursitis is an inflammation of the bursa, a small sac of fluid that helps tendons pass over bones in joints.
- Infections. Massaging during various types of infections can spread the infection to other parts of the body or even to the massage therapist.
- Thrombosis.
- Bleeding disorders (such as hemophilia).
- Tumors or any undiagnosed lumps and bumps. Only specialized oncology massage therapists should perform massage for clients with any type of cancer or tumors, as it requires specialized knowledge and techniques.
- Pregnancy.
Contraindications to honey massage:
- The main contraindication for honey massage is an allergy to honey.
- Skin diseases.
- Blood diseases.
- Existing tumors.
- Heart failure.
- Pulmonary failure.
- Renal failure.
- Thyroid dysfunction.
- Pregnancy.
- Fever.
- Diarrhea.
- Vomiting.
- Viral and infectious diseases.
Contraindications to modeling massage:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Cancer and tumor-related conditions
- Cardiovascular diseases and pacemakers
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Skin infections or damage at treatment site
- Metal implants or prosthetics
- Stroke or neurological conditions
- Blood disorders, active bleeding
- Chronic illnesses in acute stages
- Osteoporosis
- Liver/kidney failure
- Urolithiasis, cholelithiasis
- Grade 3 obesity
- Individual hypersensitivity
- Any ongoing infectious or inflammatory process
There are also cases when a massage therapist can bypass problem areas of the skin and work on other areas. For example, if you have a wound or burn, or there is an injury, for example, to one limb. Nothing will happen if the specialist does not touch the injured leg or arm during the general massage session.
Another important point – it is not recommended to have a massage during menstruation. More precisely, if it is a relaxing massage, a foot or arm massage, or a neck and collar zone massage, then you can safely go and get benefits and pleasure. But it is better to postpone such types of massage as lymphatic drainage, anti-cellulite, and abdominal massage.
